INTRODUCTION
Established in 1998, the Department of Visual Communication Design is the first visual design department in southern Taiwan. In coordination with the transitions in the government's industry policies, the goal of this department is to cultivate designers for visual communication design, visual environmental design, and video design.
CURRICULUM
The curriculum is divided into six areas, which put equal emphasis on theory and practice. In addition to the entry courses for basic skills, students can choose specialized courses based on their own interests. The curriculum includes the following areas:
Entry courses include basic design, chart design, photography, and printing, etc.
Advanced courses include layout design, advertising, design of package, CIS system, and design of illustrated book.
Design theoretical courses include visual psychology, history of design, cultural economics, the trend of modern design, enterprise planning and marketing, and so forth.
Digital and multi-media communication courses include introduction to Multi-media, CG animation, website design, computing layout, and so on.
Humanity courses include Visual Art, Environment and Art, Survey of Asian Art, Modern Western Art, as well as Aboriginal Art and Culture.
General comprehensive courses include a static design module covering areas such as Application of advertising, Application of Package, Green Design, Abroad Study, Writing and Portfolio, etc.
CHARACTERISTICS
Teaching methods strengthen active learning and deepen knowledge. To combine teaching and research, efforts are being made to stress research on basic design, and to actively develop domestic design teaching materials.
Design competitions are held in the department each semester in order to strengthen students' creative thinking and skills. This facilitates in the educational business of the Design Center, encouraging students to participate in design and development so as to enhance their competitiveness.
Internationally recognized professors or foreign experts are invited to teach during winter and summer vacations, which enables students to learn from other perspectives.
Cooperation agreements have been established between the department and the design industry such as offering seminars and design competitions at regular intervals, and implementing plans for students to work off campus in order to cultivate their talents. Students not only take part in activities sponsored by industries during their academic career, but also become acquainted with the operations of the design industry.
PROSPECTS FOR GRADUATES
Channels for Employment:
There are differences with regard to the kinds of employment prospects due to the specialized courses that students take. For example, the required basic and applied courses qualify students for employment in areas such as: advertisement design, editing design, packing design, display design and multi-media design. Graduates can even become kindergarten, elementary, and high school teachers after completing required education courses and obtaining a teaching certificate.
Channels for Further Study:
Graduates can apply for research degree in the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts & Design at Shu-Te University or study abroad.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
Japan, the USA and Europe are appropriate sites for initial exchanges. Efforts can be made to collect design data from key universities in these three areas through the Internet, establish a system of exchange visits for teachers and students, encourage teachers to conduct short-term study and research so as to be acquainted with the development of design education in other parts of the world, and arrange for short-term exchange students to learn design education from partner schools.
Professors are strongly encouraged to do research and publish their works in international periodicals and magazines that will enhance their academic reputation and that of the school. This includes the implementation of international academic research projects and transnational design competitions to improve the quality of faculty and student researches.
